About Hunar Banaras
We are not distributors of Banarasi weaving. We are Banarasi weavers.
Hunar Banaras is not a label that appeared overnight. It is a lineage, a third-generation weaving house, born and raised in the lanes of Banaras, where the rhythm of the handloom has never once fallen silent in our family. What began as our grandfather's craft became our father's calling, and today rests in the hands of three brothers of the Anwar family, carrying it forward thread by thread.
Hunar means skill. Banaras is where ours was learned.
Behind the Name
In Urdu and Hindi, "Hunar" means skill, craft, artistry earned through years of practice rather than shortcuts. For us, it stands for three things:
Heritage: Passed down three generations, never bought, never borrowed.
Handloom: Woven by hand and foot, never touched by a power machine.
Honesty: Straight from our looms to you, no middlemen in between.
We want the world to see Banarasi weaving as one of the great textile arts.
Our Journey & Philosophy
The finest Banarasi work has long passed through a maze of middlemen before reaching the person who'll actually wear it, each hand adding cost, and distance. We deal with our customers directly, the way our family always has, so what arrives at your door is exactly what left our looms.
We want the world to see Banarasi weaving as one of the great textile arts, not a regional craft tucked into one city, but a heritage deserving a global stage. Tradition was never meant to stand still, and neither are we.
Giving Credit Where It Was Always Due
OUR VISION
For too long, the hands behind India's finest textiles have stayed invisible, their work sold under bigger names, their skill rarely credited, their share rarely fair. 'Tales of Hunar' exists to change that, bringing the artisans themselves, their faces, their stories, their craft, directly to the world that wears their work.
But preserving a craft is not enough on its own. It has to grow, or it slowly dies. That is why we also want to teach the next generation, young hands willing to learn, and help them bring real innovation to this industry. Without that, in a few decades, there may be no one left to carry it forward at all.
